The Aura of the Real: Physical Objects, Scientific Specimens, and the Limits of Virtual Exhibition
Real objects possess a distinctive power: an aura that arises from their unique existence in time and space. Cherished possessions, houseplants, religious relics, or historic scientific specimens evoke reverence, intimacy, and presence that virtual representations rarely achieve. This aura preserves meaning, fosters shared intellectual space, and enables objects to “speak” through narratives supported by lab notes, manuals, press accounts, and related materials.
For example, a 19th-century microscope slide, labeled and documented by its preparator, invites exploration of discovery in ways digital versions cannot. This aligns with Walter Benjamin’s concept of aura in “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1936). Benjamin described aura as being shaped by an object’s history, physical changes, and tradition. Mechanical and digital reproduction diminish this aura by removing the work from its physical context.
Museum and heritage studies have examined these concepts in debates about authenticity, presence, and real objects compared with virtual displays. Physical encounters with authentic artifacts can fuse intellect and emotion, create a sense of being transported, and foster deep connections to the past, self, and spirit. These experiences are closely linked to tangible objects and are diminished in copies or digital reproductions, which lack physical location, substance, the “warmth” of aging, physical ownership, and a continuous historical pathway.
Scholars observe that virtual exhibitions isolate viewers from physical interaction, the sense of fragility or durability, and the irreversible passage of time. The feeling of presence is often lacking, making virtual experiences less substantial.
Reverence For Antique Microscope Slides
Religious relics vividly demonstrate this power. The Shroud of Turin, for example, focuses believers on transcendent themes regardless of debates over authenticity; its material presence holds significant cultic and contemplative weight. Secular “relics” in science, such as preserved brains, organs, or remains of notable figures, are collected with a reverence that echoes earlier Christian practices of memory, authority, and power. Microscope slides serve as scientific relics or biographical objects. Victorian preparations of tissues, diatoms, or specimens often include labels, provenance, and the preparator’s mark. A slide of diseased lung tissue from a famous autopsy, for example, embodies medical history, the limitations of 19th-century practice, and a direct material link to events. Private collectors and specialized exhibitions preserve this intimacy, though slide and book collections offer different experiences. Virtual digitization increases access but can separate viewers from the sense of reality, fragility, and historical grounding all feelings that engender an urgency to preserve.
In educational settings, such as early biology lessons using simple microscopes, the physical process of collecting and preparing samples reinforces learning in ways that screens alone may not. It also immerses the student in the pathway followed by those building science’s foundations. Ongoing questions about affordable optics or AI-driven 3D printing highlight a persistent philosophical tension: technology multiplies images, but the aura of a singular, cared-for, historically embedded object uniquely protects its existence and the fostering of reverence.
